It's still open

For the first time the green is still open to use and it will not be closing for the winter months. The only stipulation is that if there is no snow or frost on the green then keep off, otherwise you can play bowls, but don't expect a short cut green as it is essential that the cut is longer than the summer months to ensure it can cope with the extreme weather. So fill your boots, and if the weather is suitable get on the green and have some fun.

Its all over

2017 season draws to an end with George Law picking up the floodlit trophy after taking on Keith Lockley in the final. The final day of this end of season competition saw a good spectator turn out to watch both the semi-final and final, played on a superb running green. The evening also saw Cath and Sheila, treat all those who turned up with free hot dogs and pulled pork sandwiches.

September Parish Magazine Article

posted 29 Aug 2017, 05:03 by stephen wall

I would like to start this article with a little Complex news. Most of the Bowls Club members will already know that the sports ground in Loak Rd is now under new ownership. Albrighton Sports Complex successfully completed the purchase of the site from the Albrighton Sports and Social Club, we have now embarked on a new chapter in the organisations history, and our initial aim is to firmly establish the site as a community asset, the Complex is now seeking other organisations who wish to use the facility, and thereby extending the number of activities at the site. I know that all the members of both the Football and Bowls Club would like to thank both Bob Silvester and Gerry Connolly for taking on the onerous task of all the negotiations with all the solicitors concerned to secure the purchase of the site, a task that was met with one hurdle after another, well done to the both of you.

As far as the Bowls club is concerned the playing season is drawing to an end and this summer has seen plenty of activity at the club. Socially the club were heavily involved in the running of the Summer Fair raising much needed funds for the Sports Complex. The summer lunch was well supported as was the BBQ where the ladies pulled together to provide catering for 80 people and Richard organised the bowling for over 50 competitors, despite the ever changing weather these functions were extremely successful, not only for the quantity and quality of the food, but the organisation of the bowling ensured everyone had a superb couple of days. The next major event is the invitation open, which is on Saturday 3 September when this all day event of food and bowling will take place.

From the league bowling front, the clubs teams have been extremely active throughout the season and once again the club should be bringing home some silverware in the Division 5 of the Mid-Shropshire League as well as the inaugural season of the Highley League (I just hope I have not spoken too soon). A detailed report on the leagues and Competitions can be found on the clubs website As previously mentioned the season is due to close at the end of September which will also see the clubs Floodlit Competition start, members are asked to keep an eye on the notice board for the entry form, as this popular competition will see a BBQ on the finals night which historically the last night of bowling for the season. Once this is over we will then be focusing on the winter social activity which will be published shortly.

Happy Bowling and I will see you on the green.

Halfway There.

Three of the clubs teams start their promotion run-in as the half way point in the season is firmly behind them. The clubs inaugural season in the Highley League see our team at the top of Division 2 with only 9 games to go, giving them every opportunity to fight to gain promotion to Division 1. Mid-Shropshire A-team in Division 3 are currently third and only 3 points outside of the promotion spot, again a strong second half of the season could see them focusing on Division 2 for the 2018 season. The B Team in division 5 of the Mid-Shropshire league have led that division all season and after beating second place Shifnal at home should have ensured top place at the mid season turning point, however Charlton have curently taken this crown with the same points but with a better overall aggregate. The second half of the season for these three teams, could once again see some silverware come back to the club.

Summer Lunch Feast

posted 8 Jul 2017, 23:35 by stephen wall

On the 25th June the club enjoyed an excellent 3-course Summer lunch for 60 organised by Cath Ratcliffe with the assistance of a good number of the ladies who provided salads and desserts.  During the day a pairs competition was run by Richard Kinsey and Tony Maiden for 32 players.  The winners were Colin Stewart and Bryan Fowler, the runners-up Keith Lockley and Nigel Blunt.

Closing Date Looms

Purchase Complete

posted 28 Jun 2017, 09:36 by stephen wall

After a very frustrating year the purchase of the Complex site by Albrighton Sports Complex has, of Wednesday 28 June been successfully completed. This now means the future development lays firmly in the hands of both the bowls and football clubs. Congratulations to both Bob Silvester and Gerry Connolly in perusing the most frustrating process as deadline after deadline passed due to delays with one or the other of the three solicitors involved in the purchase have caused nothing but problems, which was passed down to either the Chairman or the Secretary to resolve. Thanks must also go to our three trustees who have supported the bid and provided invaluable advice throughout the whole process.
The next step is a 6 month settling in period, and the development of a new constitution and structure begins, which should be ready for presentation at the AGM in January, or sooner via an EGM. New trustees also have to be found as John Bulmer, Paul Joslin and John Hughes have decided to step down after 16 years in post.
